that computer graphics, which freeze the viewer, do
not. But I am an aesthete and for me, for us, in our
profession as architects, it is an urgent necessity to
raise the images that we produce to the level of works
of art. The form this takes differs depending on the
document or the object under consideration. Sketches,
drawings, plans and models are entirely under our
control – they transpose the ‘reality’ of the project into
standard graphic representations that we can easily
master. Their evocative power is solely the result of our
skill and the time we spend on them, even for the pres-
entation models that we have done outside. Indeed,
I am often struck, when I look at certain drawings and
models of our older projects, to see that they have not
aged a bit, as if this mode of representation conferred
a timeless quality on them.
It is completely different with computer-generated
graphics, which are always appreciated, whether we
like it or not, because of their relation to a certain
‘realistic’ photographic system of reference. We use
graphic artists to create these images and the result is
based on an intense artistic collaboration. The same is
true for photographs of our completed buildings, the
difference being that the artistic quality of the result
depends in even greater measure on the photogra-
pher’s inspiration.

The
iso
9001 standard is part of the
iso
9000 family of standards for
quality management systems. This standard stipulates the organisational
requirements for putting in place a quality system. This list of requirements
serves as the basis for certifying organisational compliance.
The requirements are divided into four major areas:
- Management responsibility: requirements for actions on the part of man-
agement as the main and permanent stakeholder in the process;
- Quality system: administrative requirements concerning knowledge
building. A requirement to take into account the concept of the system;
- Process: requirements concerning the identification and management of
processes that contribute to the satisfaction of the parties involved;
- Continuous improvement: requirements concerning the measurement
and recording of performance at all useful levels as well as undertaking
effective improvement actions.
